Why Detox?

The importance of internal cleansing.

Swimming Upstream

So many people are speaking about the importance of the word "DETOX" in our current society, but how often do we stop and consider what it means to cleanse or detox our bodies and minds, and more importantly, WHY it's so important?

According to cancer.org:

Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for the number of colorectal cancer cases in the United States for 2022 are: 106,180 new cases of colon cancer 44,850 new cases of rectal cancer.

Deaths from colorectal cancer In the United States:

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and in women, and the second most common cause of cancer deaths when numbers for men and women are combined. It's expected to cause about 52,580 deaths during 2022.

The above numbers are astounding, and many doctors, both conventional and naturopathic, believe that the toxic load inside of the colon can be lessened by regular internal cleansing services. A cleaner, less toxic environment in the colon may result in better overall health & wellness.

Not your grandma’s world anymore

I can remember when I purchased a bottle of water at the grocery store one summer day when visiting my grandfather in Cape Cod.  He was a frugal man, having grown up as one of 7 children during the Great Depression.  His mother lived to be 104 years old, and, in fact, he and all of his siblings lived to between 80-100 years of age.  The ones that did die closer to 80 only died because of smoking related illness, i.e., lung cancer, emphysema, etc., as it was the only lifestyle habit that they had that was obviously "bad for their health."

So, back to the water bottle. Here we are standing in line, and I grab this water bottle and he looks at me like I've lost my mind.  He asked me why on earth I needed that water bottle when we were going home, and we had unlimited water in the faucet.  It was at that moment that I started to realize that I was aware of our toxic environment (even our tap water), and that my grandparents (and even parents) had NO CLUE about the dangers of our current environmental conditions.  And this happened in 1985...

Fast forward to present day.  Our current world is infinitely more toxic than 37 years ago, and those toxins are coming at us from literally every direction.

Diseases of every type are growing exponentially as we are constantly exposed to toxins through the foods we eat, the products we use, the water we drink, the air we breathe and EMF (Electro Magnetic Frequencies) exposure from our "screens", to name just a few sources.

"To understand toxicity, you must understand the concept of total load, or a total amount of stressors on your system at any one time. Think of a total load like a glass filling over with water.  It takes a certain amount to fill the glass and then, after a certain point, you put more in, and it overflows.  When our detoxification system becomes overwhelmed and overloaded, we start developing symptoms and get sick, but it may take years of accumulated stress and toxins to get to that point."

- Dr. Mark Hyman

When toxic overload happens.

When we get overloaded and our organs say, "enough", we find ourselves behind the mark.  Many face this through unexpected "bad test results" at their yearly exam at their primary care physicians, or begin to experience symptoms like headaches, heartburn, bloating, brain fog, trouble sleeping, and anxiety.  All of these things can be caused by toxic overload.

Many doctors believe that colon hydrotherapy can reduce the toxic load in the large bowel area, which is the last 5 1/2 to 6 feet of the intestines.

Time To Make Some Changes

One

Drink. Drink. Drink.

Show your Lymphatic System some love.

Your Lymphatic System is your body's natural cleansing and detoxification system. Unlike the blood system, which has the heart to pump it through your body, it has to FLOW. For this reason, hydration is SO important. Drinking fresh, filtered water, (preferably not from plastic bottles) is a great place to start.

Staying hydrated can keep your lymphatic system from getting sluggish and clumped up. Lymph is mostly water, and it needs to be well hydrated in order to flow properly so that it can do its job and remove waste from your body.

A good amount of water to aim to consume daily is about 1/2 of your body weight in ounces. Add a small amount of sea salt to help your cells retain at their best.

Two

Detox your diet.

Let your food be your medicine.

Before you take that first bite, are you feeding disease or starving it out? Choose whole foods and limit processed foods with more than 5 ingredients.

Another good tip is to avoid chemical additives. If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it.

Try to eat fresh, whole foods, and eat organic as much as you can. For a list of fruits and vegetables that should always be organic, and those that are not as heavily sprayed with the toxic Glyphosate, check here:

Three

Move. Move. Move.

Help your cardiovascular health, reduce your cholesterol, and assist your lungs in detoxing your body.

Getting some movement into your day will increase flood flow to your heart and organs, oxygenate your body, and boost your white blood cell count which will help your body to fight against toxins and inflammation.

What is the best exercise? According to Bill Sears, M.D., the best exercise is one you will do! It doesn't have to be some expensive gym membership or exhausting 5-mile run. Even a short 20–30-minute brisk walk will do. Just getting out and about with purpose will result in oxygenation and cleansing benefits for your body.

Dry brushing does wonders!

Stimulating the nervous system and detoxifying the skin.

The mechanical action of dry brushing is excellent for exfoliating rough, dry skin, she says. “Dry brushing unclogs pores in the exfoliation process. It also helps detoxify your skin by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow/drainage,” says Dr. Khetarpal.

By unclogging pores, it’s easier for the body to sweat and eliminate toxins in your system.

Dry brushing can make you feel good since it has the additional benefit of stimulating your nervous system. It can also leave you feeling invigorated like a massage often does.

Intermittent Fasting

Give your digestion a break.

“You need to get rid of the old stuff before you can put in new stuff. Think about renovating your kitchen. If you have old 1970s style lime green cabinets sitting around, you need to junk them before putting in some new ones.

So, the process of destruction (removal) is just as important as the process of creation. If you simply tried to put in new cabinets without taking out the old ones, it wouldn’t look so hot.

So, fasting may in some ways reverse the aging process, by getting rid of old cellular junk and replacing it with new parts.”
